European settlers replaced original owners of the land, the Wiradjuri people during white settlement in the 1820's. Established as a farming centre, Mudgee and has been growing ever since, and the area has prospered from horticulture, viticulture, mining and tourism.
The township itself retains an unapologetic country vitality, with well restored buildings and local amenities.
With the arrival of so called 'tree-changers', Mudgee is becoming a cosmopolitan oasis in the Central Ranges where you can visit a variety of galleries and studios, sip on cappuccinos, listen to fine music, and watch art-house films.
Stroll down Church Street, and admire the buildings that give the main thoroughfare its name, now all faithfully restored to their former glories.
If you need to wet your whistle, there are plenty of great pubs and watering holes, all with a relaxed country attitude.
